What Northern Cyprus law says
In Northern Cyprus (TRNC), the Antiquities Protection Law applies, covering any items of historical, archaeological, or cultural value.
According to practicing lawyers, any person who discovers an ancient artifact or item with potential historical value is obliged to immediately notify the authorities.
What to do when a find is discovered
Upon discovering a historical find, you must:
- Immediately report it to the Department of Antiquities and Museums — Eski Eserler ve Müzeler Dairesi
- Or contact the nearest police station
Lawyer’s comment:
“Finders of historical or ancient artifacts, as well as items with historical value, are required to immediately notify the relevant department (Eski Eserler Dairesi Müdürlüğü) or the police. Concealing information about such finds or participating in its concealment is considered a criminal offense.”
Is a reward given to the finder
Northern Cyprus law provides for a reward for the finder.
The reward can be up to 50% of the estimated value of the artifact, if the item is deemed to have historical and cultural significance.
If the find, based on expert evaluation, does not have preservation value, no reward is given.
What is strictly prohibited
The law strictly forbids:
- Conducting excavations without official permission
- Intentionally searching for artifacts using metal detectors or other equipment
- Concealing a find or attempting to sell it
Any illegal excavations or searches for artifacts without the permission of the relevant authorities are subject to criminal liability.
