Following the detection of foot-and-mouth disease in Northern Cyprus, Australia has suspended imports of halloumi, SÜİB reports. The statement was published on December 23, 2025.

According to the Dairy Products Producers’ Union (SÜİB), the government of Saudi Arabia has sent a circular to customs authorities requiring the adoption of necessary measures; a ban on imports may be imposed in the short term. Exports of halloumi from Cyprus to Australia amounted to 45 tons in 2024 and, according to the union, increased to 100 thousand tons in 2025. The resulting surge in disease cases has negatively affected imports.

SÜİB President Mahmut Erden stated that public statements made during the outbreak of an animal disease caused serious damage to the industry. Erden noted that the leadership of the Livestock Breeders’ Union made irresponsible remarks and called for a wait-and-see approach until information is confirmed. According to him, if necessary, official statements should be made by the Ministry “in a polite manner”.

Erden also warns that other importing countries may close their borders in the near future. He links the spread of the disease to the illegal movement of animals from the southern part of the island and emphasizes the damage to the sector. Erden concluded his speech with the words “Now let them burn henna”.
