Car Plunges from 50-Meter Cliff near St. Hilarion Castle in Kyrenia
A serious traffic accident occurred in Kyrenia near St. Hilarion Castle. On the evening of September 1, 2025, a car fell from a cliff about 50 meters high. According to Kıbrıs Gazetesi, the driver lost control, and the vehicle crashed into the so-called “tank section” of the fortress, which is a deep cistern or reservoir.
Civil defense units, the fire department, and police promptly arrived at the scene. Rescue teams, working together, extracted the driver from the crumpled car and handed him over to the 112 emergency medical team. Detailed information about the condition of the injured has not yet been released.
The incident again drew attention to the dangers of mountain and coastal roads in Northern Cyprus, where narrow switchbacks and steep cliffs pose a heightened risk for drivers. Experts and rescue services remind drivers to strictly adhere to speed limits, check their vehicles on winding roads, use seat belts, and call 112 immediately in case of an emergency.
The investigation into the circumstances of the accident is ongoing, and no official statements from the police have been released so far.
