Berat Kandili will be observed on Monday, February 2
Berat Kandili, considered the “herald” of the upcoming Ramadan, will be observed on Monday, February 2. The celebration falls on the 15th night of the month of Sha’ban.
According to religious interpretation, the word “berat” signifies purification from sins, gaining divine forgiveness and mercy. The source also notes a historical event: in the second year of the Hijra, on the 15th day of Sha’ban, during the second rak‘ah of the noon prayer in the Bani Salim Mosque, a revelation was sent regarding the change of the Qibla from Masjid al-Aqsa to Masjid al-Haram; Prophet Hazreti Muhammad, together with his congregation, turned toward the Kaaba at that moment.
A traditional hadith recommendation is given: spend the night of the 15th of Sha’ban in worship and fast during its day. The hadith states: “Spend the night of the 15th of Sha’ban in devotion, and fast during the day. For on this night, the Almighty shows His mercy and says: ‘Whoever repents, I accept his repentance; whoever asks for sustenance, I give it; whoever asks for healing, I grant it; whoever has another request, I give him what he asks.’”
The announcement also mentions upcoming religious dates: the beginning of Ramadan is scheduled for February 19, Qadr Night on March 16, and Ramadan Bayram on March 20.
