Up to 70% of women after childbirth in Northern Cyprus face postpartum depression

According to experts, about 70% of women who have recently become mothers experience symptoms of postpartum depression. Psychologist Tugce Denizgil Evre from Near East University (Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi) notes that this condition is observed in most women in the first weeks after childbirth, and without treatment it may last for months or even years.
The causes of this condition include hormonal fluctuations, physical exhaustion, insomnia, anxiety, and stress caused by changes in lifestyle. The main symptoms specialists highlight are constant sadness, a feeling of emptiness, irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, loss of interest in everyday life, and in severe cases, thoughts of harming oneself or the baby.
Evre emphasizes that the risk of postpartum depression increases in women who do not receive support from family and their environment, face financial difficulties, previously had emotional issues, or experienced complicated childbirth. In such cases, seeking professional help in time is extremely important.
According to the specialist, treatment for postpartum depression includes psychotherapy, support from relatives, and if necessary, medication prescribed by a doctor considering breastfeeding.
The expert also urges family members to pay attention to the mother’s emotional state, help her with daily tasks, give her the opportunity to rest, and not leave her isolated. “Postpartum depression is not weakness or whim, but a condition that requires understanding and support. Without proper intervention, it may negatively affect not only the woman, but also the child’s development,” Evre stressed.
