Environmentalists Raise Alarm Over Wastewater Pollution in Gemikonağı
The Lefke Environmental Protection and Ecology Association has sounded the alarm over uncontrolled wastewater discharge in Gemikonağı, urging authorities to take immediate action.
According to the association, an inspection was carried out in the area following multiple complaints from residents. The investigation, conducted at the Tüfekçi facilities, confirmed that untreated wastewater was being directly discharged into a nearby stream.
The statement highlighted that this not only threatens water quality but also negatively impacts the local environment and aesthetics. Additionally, residents frequently report strong unpleasant odors in the area.
“During our inspection, we discovered a plastic pipe running from certain properties to the stream. However, it is still unclear whether this pipe is the main source of the problem. A more in-depth investigation is needed, and authorities must intervene without delay,” the environmentalists stated.
The Lefke Department of Environmental Protection has already been informed about the situation in Gemikonağı.
