The EU will finance the expansion of the Metehan checkpoint: the works will continue until January 2026

The Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus reported that the project to expand the Metehan checkpoint (Metehan Geçiş Kapısı) is financed under the Financial Assistance Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community and implemented through UNDP within the Local Infrastructure Services (LIF) project.
The goal of the project is to improve vehicle and pedestrian traffic, making the crossing of the checkpoint smoother and safer for all users.
The expansion phase has already begun, and with it:
- traffic jams are expected to decrease,
- mobility will increase,
- and waiting times at the crossing will be significantly reduced.
All works will be carried out within the buffer zone and include:
- excavation and earthworks,
- road paving,
- electrical and mechanical systems,
- landscaping.
The project is expected to be completed at the end of January 2026.
The EU Representation stressed that during the works all possible measures will be taken to minimize inconvenience for citizens.
After the modernization is completed, the upgraded Metehan checkpoint is expected to facilitate movement between the two sides of the island and strengthen contacts between people.
