Kyrenia Mayor Outraged Over Crumbling Breakwater at the Ancient Harbour
Kyrenia Mayor Murat Şenkul has publicly criticized the government over the deteriorating condition of the breakwater that protects the city’s historic Ancient Harbour. He’s calling on the authorities to either carry out urgent repairs or hand over full control of the site to the municipality.
The mayor voiced his frustration in a social media post, highlighting the alarming state of the breakwater:
“I’ll be genuinely surprised if it doesn’t collapse this winter,” Şenkul wrote. “The stones have disappeared, and the foundation has been washed away. Either restore the breakwater properly or give full responsibility for the Ancient Harbour to the Municipality of Kyrenia.”
The Ancient Harbour officially reopened in December 2023 after a year-long restoration that began on December 1, 2022. The initial deadline for completion was May, but the project was delayed several times — first to September, then to early October. Although the port is now open to the public, beautification efforts along the waterfront and surrounding areas are still ongoing.
