Nicosia Mayor's name used in fraudulent scheme
The Mayor of Nicosia, Mehmet Harmancı, has reported a fraud attempt in which unknown individuals used his name.
According to Harmancı, the scammers called citizens claiming that he had allegedly purchased a yacht and wanted to sell a "surplus" inflatable boat (zodiac). In some instances, they posed as a ship's captain and asked people to contact specific numbers.
One entrepreneur received such a call, after which the fraudsters' details, including an account number, were collected and handed over to the police. An official complaint has been filed.
The Mayor urged citizens not to respond to such requests and emphasized that neither he personally nor the municipality conducts such sales.
"I don't have a yacht, a ship, or even a boat," Harmancı added.
