Presidential candidate Tufan Erhürman stated that the rights of children from mixed marriages to EU citizenship are not protected
The leader of the Republican Turkish Party and presidential candidate Tufan Erhürman stated on August 19 in Karaoğlanoğlu (Kyrenia) that over the past five years there has been inadequate protection of the rights of children from mixed marriages to obtain EU citizenship, resulting in "lost" opportunities for the younger generation. Erhürman spoke to those gathered alongside TDP chairman Zeki Çeler, Kyrenia Mayor Murat Şenkül, and several deputies.
According to Erhürman, the current president’s administration has avoided defending this right, which means that children who were 13 to 15 years old five years ago have now lost the chance to study in Europe by the time they reached 18. He also emphasized that during the past five years, there were virtually no negotiations on a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue, the matters concerning Göynük (Varosha) were not addressed, problematic aspects of trade across the Green Line remained unresolved, and operations at the Metehan checkpoint have become more complicated.

Oğün Talat, head of the CTP district branch in Kyrenia, described the upcoming elections as critical and urged voters to choose “a leader who will convey our position to the presidency.” Zeki Çeler noted that, in his view, this election concerns societal representation rather than left- or right-wing politics.
Practical significance for residents: According to the speakers, current policies have limited opportunities for travel, education, and external business activities for local entrepreneurs, making issues of civil rights and border crossing regimes a key part of the pre-election agenda.
