KTTB: "The Teknecik power plant continues to harm human health and the environment"
The Turkish Cypriot Medical Association (KTTB) stated that the black smoke emitted by the Teknecik power plant indicates the use of low-quality fuel and reflects ongoing environmental pollution and harm to the population.
According to the association, the power plant has been operating for many years without protective systems, with poor maintenance and harmful fuel, putting air quality throughout the Mediterranean region at risk.
It is noted that the smoke contains hazardous substances that can increase the incidence of diseases: asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), strokes, heart attacks, cancer, and developmental problems in children. Especially at risk are children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses living nearby.
It is also emphasized that heavy metals in the emissions may cause attention disorders, developmental delays in children, and low birth weight in newborns of pregnant women.
The association called the refusal to switch to environmentally friendly fuel at the Teknecik plant a crime against public health and urged for immediate reform of its operations.
