KTTB: Chlorine poisoning at Teknecik Power Plant occurred due to safety violations
The Turkish Cypriot Doctors’ Association (KTTB) stated on 5 September that the incident of workers being poisoned by chlorine-containing gas at Teknecik Power Plant was a result of "negligence and irresponsibility."
According to the organization, the statement was signed by KTTB Chairman Ceyhun Dalkan. It emphasizes that the incident cannot be considered a simple "accident": in the association's view, it is evidence of systematic disregard for occupational health and safety requirements.
KTTB claims that workers at the facility were operating without proper personal protective equipment and without occupational health services. The statement notes that chemical poisoning at a strategic facility endangers not only employees but also the population in surrounding areas.
The association called the failure to follow safety measures a "serious crime against public health" and criticized the position of Health Minister Hakan Dinçyürek. KTTB demands an independent investigation, transparent publication of its results, and the initiation of appropriate legal proceedings.
The organization also insists on the urgent establishment of occupational hygiene and medical services at the plant and calls on the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Labor to immediately conduct unplanned inspections at Teknecik and other enterprises. According to KTTB, residents of nearby areas should seek medical help at the first signs of respiratory irritation or deterioration of health.
