A forest fire in Turkey's Çanakkale Province has led to a temporary halt of vessel traffic through the Dardanelles. The restrictions affected the north-to-south direction and were introduced to ensure the safety of aviation engaged in firefighting. According to the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, airplanes and helicopters are actively using the strait to collect water, making safe vessel passage impossible during this period.

The fire broke out near the city of Çanakkale and quickly spread over a large area, posing a threat to both forested lands and nearby settlements. Seven airplanes, six helicopters, and 455 firefighters and rescuers have been deployed to fight the blaze. Ground crews are also involved, creating firebreaks and cooling the fire's edge to prevent further spread.

The Governor of Çanakkale stated that medical assistance was required for 14 residents who inhaled smoke. All affected individuals have received the necessary aid, and there is no threat to their lives. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and take measures to protect residential areas and infrastructure.

The suspension of shipping is temporary and will be lifted as soon as the aircraft complete the active phase of firefighting. According to maritime authorities, vessel traffic will resume only when full safety for crews and equipment is guaranteed. The Dardanelles remain a strategically important maritime route connecting the Aegean and Marmara Seas, and any disruptions directly affect international trade and logistics.

At present, rescue services are focusing on containing the fire, preventing its re-ignition, and restoring normal navigation through the strait as quickly as possible.
