The mayor of Lapta–Alsancak municipality, Fırat Ataser, has called for the annulment of gun permits issued in the country, stating that the mass granting of such documents poses a threat to public safety. According to Gündem Kıbrıs, the mayor’s statement was published on August 24, 2025.

Ataser noted that “hundreds of people” have already received permits and that such a practice could encourage criminal groups and create favorable conditions for individuals with criminal tendencies. He urged the authorities to revoke all previously issued gun permits as soon as possible.

In addition, the publication mentioned that politician Zeki Çeler also criticized the government’s actions, calling the situation “shameful.” The material does not provide official data on the exact number of permits issued or on the reactions of the competent authorities.

For the residents of Northern Cyprus, this could mean a possible review of licenses and tighter control over the circulation of firearms if the mayor’s demand is implemented. It is recommended to follow official announcements from the police and ministries, and to report any information about illegal weapons to law enforcement authorities.
