Scammers in Northern Cyprus are selling non-existent cars — police launch investigation
The police of Northern Cyprus have issued an official warning about a rise in online fraud cases related to car sales through social media. In recent weeks, several incidents have been recorded in which residents fell victim to scams while trying to buy cars at suspiciously low prices.
According to law enforcement, scammers create fake pages on Facebook, Instagram, and other social platforms, posting car sale ads with attractive photos often stolen from the internet. After establishing contact with potential buyers, the perpetrators demand advance payments or deposits to “reserve” the vehicle. In some cases, they even provide forged receipts and fake documents to make the deal appear legitimate.
Police note that such schemes have intensified recently amid rising demand for used cars and increasing prices for new ones. Many citizens, trying to save money, fall into the scammers’ traps and lose large amounts of money.
Authorities urge the public to be extremely cautious when making online purchases. It is advised not to transfer money before personally inspecting the vehicle, to avoid sellers who refuse to meet in person, and to always verify car documents. Additionally, buyers should deal only with licensed car dealers and trusted sellers.
Law enforcement agencies reported that investigations have already begun, and in some cases, the identities of suspects have been established. The police emphasize that combating online fraud will be one of their key priorities in the near future, as the number of such crimes continues to rise.
