Münür Rahvancıoğlu: Draft bill to limit occupational injury benefits to six months
Münür Rahvancıoğlu, Deputy Secretary General of the Independence Path party, stated on Genç TV on March 13, 2026, that a draft decree and amendments to the Social Security Law will limit occupational injury payments to six months and affect workers' rights in Northern Cyprus.
According to the Independence Path party, the change also includes an increase in insurance contributions for third-country workers and restrictions on their social rights, including matters of breastfeeding, pregnancy, childbirth, and marriage. Rahvancıoğlu noted that the specific reduction amounts were presented in percentage terms during his speech.
He claimed that these measures could affect not only foreign workers but also citizens, citing employees in high-risk sectors like Kıb-Tek as an example. Rahvancıoğlu also pointed to a failure to comply with constitutional principles of equality and criticized both the government and the main opposition CTP for the lack of public debate on the bill.
As proposals, he called for a ban on hiring non-unionized workers, pegging the minimum wage to the lowest civil service salary, tightening controls on working hours, combating illegal employment, and expanding workers' social rights.
