Northern Cyprus Gears Up for Ramadan
Preparations are in full swing in the TRNC for the arrival of Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. In 2025, Ramadan will begin on February 28 and conclude on March 29.
The first Tarawih prayer will take place on the evening of Friday, February 28. That night, Muslims will gather for Suhoor (the pre-dawn meal) before beginning their fast, followed by the first Iftar (the evening meal to break the fast) later that day. On March 26, Muslims will observe Laylat al-Qadr—the Night of Power—considered in the Quran as "better than a thousand months." The holy month will conclude with Eid al-Fitr on Sunday, March 30, marking a time of celebration and togetherness for Muslims worldwide.
This year, the Supreme Council for Religious Affairs in the TRNC has set the amount for Fitrah (the obligatory charitable donation given during Ramadan) at 180 Turkish lira. Meanwhile, traditional Ramadan treats will be available at set prices: Ramadan pita—a staple during the month—will be sold in bakeries for 40 Turkish lira, while special Ramadan buns will be available for 55 lira.
