New Public Transport Fare System Underway in Northern Cyprus
Authorities in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) have initiated the process of revising public transport fare rates. Minister of Public Works and Transport, Erhan Arıklı, met with the head of the Turkish Cypriot Public Transport Operators Association to discuss the challenges faced by operators in the sector.
Minister Arıklı stated that determining new fares is a priority to address the ongoing crisis in passenger transport. He confirmed that the Director of the Traffic Department has been instructed to begin the necessary studies. Once these analyses are completed, a meeting will be held with the Ministry of Finance to finalize the new tariffs.
The union leader highlighted the severe economic pressures faced by public transport operators, warning that without updated fare rates, many businesses could face bankruptcy.
Last week, Fuat Topaloğlu, President of the Public Transport Operators Association (KAR-İŞ), warned that the country’s transport sector is on the verge of collapse. The union has threatened to halt all bus services unless immediate action is taken.
