A Turkey-based company plans to implement a large-scale renewable energy project in Northern Cyprus — the construction of a 50-megawatt solar power plant with a total cost of approximately $60 million.

The project is seen as a strategic step to address chronic energy supply problems and strengthen the country’s energy independence. The new power plant will reduce the load on existing infrastructure and provide more stable electricity supply, including for the industrial sector.

The Minister of Economy and Energy of the TRNC, Olgun Amcaoğlu, noted that discussions are continuing in parallel on various options for energy cooperation with Turkey, including the previously proposed submarine electricity cable project. At the same time, he emphasized that under current conditions the most realistic and effective solution is the development of domestic solar generation with energy storage systems.

The project, called SANHO, will be implemented in the Serhatköy area and предусматривает not only electricity generation but also a 25-megawatt energy storage system, which will make it possible to compensate for production fluctuations and increase grid reliability.

According to the Vice President of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sercan Görgüner Bahçeci, the facility is scheduled to be commissioned in 2028. It is expected that after launch the plant will be able to cover up to 60% of the industrial sector’s electricity needs.

The authorities of Northern Cyprus view the project as an important contribution to the transition to “green” energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and strengthening the country’s economic resilience.
