"Being a Woman: Our Story" Conference Held in Northern Cyprus
As part of International Women's Day, the event "Being a Woman: Our Story" was held at the Atatürk Culture and Congress Center in Northern Cyprus, organized by the Near East University in collaboration with the Gender Research and Implementation Center and the Atatürkist Thought Development Club.
The meeting discussed the position of women in society, the struggle for equality, and the challenges women face within the framework of healthcare, psychology, local government, and a human rights-based approach. Speakers at the opening included the Rector of Near East University Professor Tamer Şanlıdağ, the Head of the Gender Research and Implementation Center Associate Professor Ayça Demet Atay, and the Chairman of the Atatürkist Thought Development Club Zafer Özbir. Associate Professor Tijen Zeybek served as the moderator.
Panelists included TRNC Central Prison psychologist Hazar Topal, Head of Social Services at Nicosia Municipality Sibel Demirpençe, Professor of Public Health at Near East University Professor Özen Aşut, and Head of the Department of Political Science Professor Nur Köprülü.
The organizers emphasized the responsibility of universities in promoting equality and shaping the legal awareness of youth. For residents in Northern Cyprus, it is beneficial that the event's agenda included specific topics—access to healthcare, psychological support, and the work of local services—which touch upon daily life and can influence the development of local initiatives in the field of women's rights.
