Funeral costs soar in Northern Cyprus
Funeral prices have risen sharply in Northern Cyprus.
Due to the rising cost of marble and concrete, cemetery prices have skyrocketed. The minimum amount required for a burial is about 40,000 Turkish lira.
This amount can increase when taking into account additional expenses: preparation and transportation of the body, and ritual service fees that vary by municipality.
A basic grave costs between 40,000 and 65,000 lira.
According to experts in the field, the simplest single-level graves cost from 40,000 lira, while so-called “classic” options start from 65,000 lira. In some areas, an annual fee is required for a grave, which may equal the amount of the minimum wage. Also, for example, in Nicosia an extra 5,000 lira must be paid for a burial spot.
In addition, due to currency exchange fluctuations, marble prices continue to rise. Experts say marble can triple in price in just a month. As a result, a grave with an expensive headstone can cost up to 350,000 Turkish lira.
