A state of heightened readiness has been declared in Northern Cyprus due to wildfires
A heightened fire hazard status has been declared in Northern Cyprus due to ongoing extreme heat, drought, and a sharp drop in humidity levels. Authorities warn that the region is at high risk of natural fires, and even the smallest mistake could lead to a large-scale disaster.
The situation was officially declared an emergency by the Emergency Committee under the Prime Minister. The statement emphasizes that current climate conditions pose a serious threat not only to the island’s natural ecosystems but also a direct danger to human life and property. Rural and forested areas are especially vulnerable, where any spark can quickly turn into a wildfire.
The Committee strongly urges citizens to observe strict safety measures. Key prohibitions include lighting fires in open areas, burning trash, dry grass or plant remains, and smoking near roads, fields, and forests. Special attention is given to the use of equipment that can cause overheating or sparking — such devices are strictly prohibited in recreational areas, parks, and forest zones.
If smoke, flames, or suspicious signs of fire are detected, citizens should immediately contact the Forestry Department hotline at 177. Prompt response can prevent disaster.
The statement also expresses gratitude to firefighters, civil defense personnel, and volunteers who remain on heightened alert and work round the clock in heat and overload conditions. Authorities stress that only through joint efforts and responsible behavior can the island’s nature be preserved and people’s safety ensured.
“Every conscious act today is a saved hectare of forest tomorrow,” the Committee concludes.
