Frustrated Patient Smashes Windows at Girne Hospital with Fire Extinguisher
A patient caused a disturbance at Akçiçek State Hospital in Girne, North Cyprus, after becoming angry over a long wait to be seen. In a fit of rage, the man shattered several windows using a fire extinguisher. He was arrested at the scene and will remain in custody for two days.
According to a police statement, the incident took place on the afternoon of May 17 in the emergency room's reception area. The 29-year-old man reportedly began shouting and then hurled a fire extinguisher at the glass entrance door, breaking it. He was immediately detained by authorities.
The suspect appeared in court the following day and was formally charged with causing deliberate property damage and disturbing the peace. The court ordered that he remain in custody for two days while the investigation continues.
In response to the incident, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Pharmacists' Association issued a statement condemning the attack and calling for better protection for healthcare workers. The association emphasized the importance of safeguarding medical staff:
“Healthcare professionals are the backbone of public health. Any verbal or physical violence against them harms not only the individuals involved but also the entire healthcare system and society as a whole.”
