April Hunger Threshold Announced in Northern Cyprus

The Cyprus Turkish Civil Servants Union (KTAMS) has announced that the “hunger threshold” in Northern Cyprus as of April 30, 2025, is 29,787 Turkish lira. This is the minimum monthly income a family of four needs to afford a healthy, balanced, and adequate diet.

KTAMS President Güven Bengihan pointed out that the official inflation figures “do not fully reflect the real hardships faced by the population.”

According to the union’s study, the estimated daily cost of food required for a healthy diet is as follows:

• Adult man: 266.89 TL/day → 8,006.70 TL/month

• Adult woman: 256.39 TL/day → 7,691.70 TL/month

• Teenager (15–19 years): 281.88 TL/day → 8,456.40 TL/month

• Child (4–6 years): 187.74 TL/day → 5,632.20 TL/month

The report was prepared by the Department of Inpatient Health Institutions under the TRNC Ministry of Health. It was based on a nutritional plan designed for a family of four and calculated using current market prices. The price data was provided by the TRNC Statistical Institute.

For comparison, the Institute reported that inflation in April stood at 4.06%. Cumulative inflation over the past three months reached 13.08%, and annual inflation was recorded at 40.96%.
