Oguz Ufuk Haksever: Cyprus's geopolitical importance is growing, but the island's issue is not at the center of global attention
In an interview with Kıbrıs Postası TV on September 4, Oguz Ufuk Haksever, Secretary for International and Bi-Communal Relations of the Liberal Democratic Movement, stated that despite the growing geopolitical significance of Cyprus, international conflicts push the Cypriot issue into the background. According to him, the activities of groups such as BRICS and the competition among major powers shift the focus of world capitals to more acute regional crises.
Haksever noted that the United States managed to protect regional interests through strengthened ties with Southern Cyprus during the presidency of Nikos Christodoulides, and that Donald Trump's populist rhetoric is unlikely to make the resolution of the Cyprus problem attractive for his foreign policy. He also reminded that under the Annan Plan, the international situation was calmer, which facilitated the advancement of negotiations.
For the residents of Northern Cyprus, this means a low likelihood of a rapid breakthrough in the negotiation process and continued dependence on regional actors and their interests. Haksever emphasized that accelerating the process would require mutual benefits for all parties. It is recommended to monitor the actions of regional players and official statements, as the external context determines the chances of resuming constructive negotiations.
