Olgun Amcaoğlu: Kıb‑Tek should be transferred to the Ministry of Economy and Energy
The Minister of Economy and Energy of Northern Cyprus, Olgun Amcaoğlu, stated on Kanal T that the Turkish Cypriot Electricity Authority (Kıbrıs Türk Elektrik Kurumu — Kıb‑Tek) should be subordinated to the Ministry of Energy. According to him, Kıb‑Tek is currently not part of the ministry's structure, while with a budget of around 40 billion Turkish lira, it plays a key role in the country’s energy planning.
Amcaoğlu noted that Northern Cyprus has high renewable energy potential: "there are about 333 sunny days per year here, which allows covering needs through renewable sources." The minister also mentioned the need for energy interconnection with Turkey and stated that he had negotiations with his Turkish counterpart on this matter.
Regarding projects in Southern Cyprus, Amcaoğlu considers them economically unprofitable and highlighted problems with high prices and penalties for non-compliance with emission standards. He emphasized that energy should be included on the agenda of official 5+1 negotiations.
For residents, this means that reorganizing Kıb‑Tek management and implementing plans for renewable energy and interconnection may lead to more coordinated planning and potentially cheaper and more stable electricity supply. According to the minister, the Ministry is open to dialogue and implements short-, medium-, and long-term plans.
