The leader of the Halkın Partisi, Kudret Özersay, stated that the government and the opposition should jointly appeal to Brussels demanding intervention over difficulties at the crossings between Northern and Southern Cyprus. Speaking on TV 2020, he emphasized the need for a “common voice” and action at the level of the European Union.

Özersay noted that disruptions at the checkpoints had occurred before, and it is incorrect to link them solely to the recent detention of five Greek Cypriots. According to him, changes in the practice of the southern side, which worsen queues and delays, should be reported in advance to the European Commission in accordance with the “Green Line” Regulation (introductory point 10).

As practical measures, Özersay proposed opening the Ledra Palace crossing for ambulances and vehicles with tourist permits, which could ease the burden on the Metehan checkpoint. He also pointed out that granting permits for vehicle movement in Southern Cyprus only through Metehan increases congestion.

For the residents of Northern Cyprus, this means that negotiations with the EU may take place soon, but no immediate solution should be expected: until agreements are reached, queues and checks at the checkpoints may continue. Residents are advised to check the status of crossings in advance and, if possible, consider alternative routes.
