Passenger sentenced to 4 years in prison for 'bomb joke' on plane
The incident occurred on an AJet flight from Istanbul to Şanlıurfa, which was scheduled to depart from Sabiha Gökçen Airport.
According to Turkish media, one of the passengers, addressing her sister, said she was a "human bomb." Although the woman later claimed it was a joke, all passengers were immediately evacuated from the aircraft according to security protocols.
Following this, the aircraft and luggage were thoroughly inspected. Due to the incident, the flight was delayed by approximately three hours, and both women were detained.
The court found the passenger guilty of obstructing air traffic and sentenced her to 4 years and 2 months in prison.
In addition:
- both passengers were blacklisted by the airline for one year,
- the airline may file a lawsuit for damages due to the flight delay.
Lawyers note that in such cases, the guilty parties may also be required to pay for fuel costs, staff labor, and passenger compensation.
