Police Officers in Northern Cyprus Start Wearing Body Cameras
Police officers across the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) have begun wearing body cameras on their uniforms. This initiative, which was previously only implemented in Girne and Nicosia, is now being rolled out throughout the entire region.
The Police Headquarters launched the use of body cameras, which can record both audio and video, for police teams across the region. The goal is to protect the legal rights of both citizens and officers, while also providing a "higher level of service." The cameras will record police activities during public order inspections and traffic checks in public spaces.
Girne and Nicosia were selected as pilot regions for the program, and the introduction of body cameras has been positively received by both local residents and the officers using them. Following the success of the pilot, the decision was made to extend the use of body cameras throughout Northern Cyprus.
In addition to recording traffic violations during both stationary and mobile traffic inspections, the cameras will also document potential incidents, complaints, and statements from the public during public order and traffic checks.
