North Cyprus police introduced a new system of community-supported road safety
The police of North Cyprus announced the introduction of a new road safety system based on the principles of community-supported policing (toplum destekli polislik). This model assumes that responsibility for road safety is shared between the police and road users themselves.
According to the General Directorate of Police, the new system includes strengthened preventive measures, awareness-raising programs, and active involvement of society in preventing traffic accidents. Drivers are encouraged not to see traffic rules as a mere formality, but to consciously support police efforts through attentive driving, compliance with speed limits, and refusal to drive under the influence.
According to police data, the first results are already noticeable: in January 2026, the number of fatal traffic accidents and road deaths significantly decreased compared to the same period last year. The department emphasizes that this result was achieved not only due to inspections, but also thanks to the new model of interaction with society.
The police stated that the system will continue to develop, and control and prevention of violations will continue throughout the country. Drivers are urged to “do this together” and make a personal contribution to road safety.
