The Chair of the Teachers’ Union Reported an Increase in Violence in Schools in Northern Cyprus
The Chair of the Turkish Cypriot Secondary Education Teachers’ Union, Selma Eylem, issued a written statement regarding the increasing cases of bullying and violence among students in Northern Cyprus.
Eylem stated that videos involving students outside school are not isolated incidents and reflect the consequences of education policies implemented in the country. According to her, the union has repeatedly warned about the failure to ensure a safe and healthy educational environment.
According to Eylem, school infrastructure and equipment are in poor condition: children and teachers are forced to study and work in containers and at construction sites. A shortage of staff was also noted, with vacancies for principals, deputy principals, heads of departments, and workshop supervisors remaining unfilled.
Eylem reported that in the first semester of the previous academic year there was a shortage of 53 teachers. She also noted an insufficient number of guidance counselors and special education teachers. She stated that the Ministry of Education had concealed cases of harassment and rape and ignored consultations when developing measures.
Eylem insists on strengthening psychological support services, fully staffing schools, and developing a comprehensive plan with the participation of all stakeholders. She also pointed out that the transition to full-day schooling has created additional risks related to children’s nutrition and safety, which, in her opinion, exacerbates the problem.
