TRNC President Meets with UN Secretary-General’s Envoy
President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar, met with María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, the personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Cyprus. The meeting took place at 10:30 a.m. at the Presidential Palace.
This visit marks Holguín’s first trip to the island since her reappointment.
During her stay, the Colombian diplomat is expected to support both sides in advancing six confidence-building measures that were agreed upon in Geneva. She is also helping lay the groundwork for an informal meeting planned for July.
As part of her visit, Holguín met on Saturday with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres officially reappointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar as his personal envoy to Cyprus earlier this month. Her new term began on May 12, 2025. She now has around two months to prepare the next steps in the Cyprus peace process ahead of the anticipated five-party talks scheduled to take place in Geneva at the end of July.
Holguín is expected to leave Cyprus on Saturday, May 31. After her visit to the island, she will travel to the three guarantor countries—Turkey, Greece, and the United Kingdom—for further diplomatic discussions.
