Emek-İş trade union announces 24-hour strike at Ektam Kıbrıs LTD
The Emek-İş trade union has announced the start of a 24-hour strike at Ektam Kıbrıs LTD, accusing the company’s management of exerting pressure on employees and seriously violating trade union rights.
According to the union’s statement, Ektam employees had worked for a long period without job security and basic labor rights, after which they decided to join Emek-İş. All legally required procedures were completed, and the union obtained authorized status, officially inviting the employer to negotiations on a collective agreement.
However, Emek-İş claims that immediately afterward, the company director began pressuring staff, attempting to force employees to sign resignation letters. Reports also mention threats and attempts to undermine the union’s organization within the company.
The union emphasized that it does not intend to tolerate such actions and considers them a direct violation of the constitutional right to trade union activity. In response, a decision was made to hold a strike.
“Neither pressure, nor threats, nor attempts at intimidation will deprive workers of their lawful right to unite,” the Emek-İş statement said.
