Union Warns of Potential Salary Cuts for Foreign Workers in Northern Cyprus
Salih Erşangil, head of the Equality and Justice Union (HAKSEN), has stated that the government is taking steps that could lead to reduced wages for foreign workers.
According to Erşangil, despite a court injunction temporarily halting related decisions, these measures are being pursued through alternative methods. He emphasized that the consequences could affect not only foreign nationals but all workers across the board.
He noted that state contributions for workers from third countries have been slashed from 6% to 1.25%, a move the union claims has already caused a dip in take-home pay.
Furthermore, proposed amendments to social insurance laws could grant the government the power to hike insurance premiums, adding a financial burden to both employees and employers.
The union warns that such measures may weaken social protections and negatively impact labor rights, including benefits for pregnancy, workplace injuries, and illness.
HAKSEN declared its intent to oppose these changes, noting that they threaten the rights of all workers regardless of citizenship.
