Protest for Safe Education at Lefke İstiklal Primary School
Students at Lefke İstiklal Primary School are forced to study in unsafe container classrooms because renovation works on the school building have not started for 14 months.
The school has around 1,300 students, with younger classes held in temporary facilities, creating unequal conditions compared to other schools in the region.
The Cyprus Turkish Teachers’ Union (KTÖS) organized a protest in front of the school.
The union’s Secretary-General, Burak Maviş, stated that if the authorities do not present an action plan within two days, a strike will take place on Wednesday from 08:00 to 12:40.
The protest was attended by representatives of the parents’ committee as well as the mayor of Lefke, Aziz Kaya.
All participants called on the authorities to take immediate action to ensure safe and equal learning conditions for children.
The union emphasized that students have the right to know when their school will be repaired and that temporary solutions cannot replace proper education in safe conditions.
