Today in Northern Cyprus the thermometer will rise to 44 degrees
According to the Meteorological Service, extreme heat will begin in Cyprus from 11:00 today. It is expected that air temperatures in central regions will rise to 41–44 °C, and this anomaly will last until 16:00 on Sunday.
Occupational safety experts warn that without additional regulations, such temperatures pose a serious threat to the health of outdoor workers. They note that the current legal framework is insufficient.
Experts from the meteorological council pointed out that forecasts for July 23–27 predict temperatures up to 44 °C, and when combined with high humidity, it may feel like 50 °C or higher. They emphasized the importance of avoiding sun exposure from 11:00 to 16:00 and called for urgent legislative changes to protect workers.
The Chairman of the Occupational Safety Association stated that restrictions should not only apply when temperatures exceed 40 °C, but also during periods of high humidity. In his view, both factors must be considered when deciding on outdoor work bans, and supervisory bodies must strictly monitor compliance.
Sources in the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare report that the department has requested weekly weather forecasts from the Meteorological Service to determine outdoor working time regulations. A decision on a possible midday work ban is expected in the coming days.
The Ministry also confirmed that, upon receiving meteorological data, appropriate measures will be taken to ensure the safety of outdoor workers.
