Sevim Yöksüz: Regular exercise is the most effective way to maintain bone health in Northern Cyprus
Associate Professor of the Faculty of Health Sciences and lecturer at the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at Eastern Mediterranean University in Northern Cyprus, Sevim Yöksüz, stated on October 21, 2025, on the occasion of World Osteoporosis Day, that regular physical activity is the key to protecting bones.
She reminded that osteoporosis is a metabolic disease leading to a decrease in bone mass and an increased risk of fractures, affecting more than 200 million people worldwide. According to her, osteoporosis occurs in 30% of women over 50 and in 6% of men; about 9 million fractures related to this disease are recorded annually.
Yöksüz listed the main risk factors: age, menopause, low physical activity, endocrine and gastrointestinal diseases, malnutrition, and side effects of medications. Osteoporosis often develops asymptomatically until a fracture occurs, but may cause back pain, loss of height, posture disorders, muscle spasms, and balance problems.
For risk groups, annual DEXA scans (bone densitometry) are recommended under medical supervision. Treatment should include prescribed medication, diet according to a nutritionist’s advice, and a safe exercise program under physiotherapeutic control. For prevention and bone strengthening, a combination of strength training 2–3 times a week, aerobic exercise (walking) 4–7 times a week, and balance, stretching, and posture exercises is advised. To reduce the risk of falls, home adaptations and appropriate footwear should be considered. Additionally, exposure to sunlight for vitamin D synthesis, nature walks, and swimming are recommended when appropriate.
