Turkish Doctors' Union in Northern Cyprus: Hearing loss can be managed with early diagnosis
The Turkish Doctors' Union in Northern Cyprus issued a statement on the occasion of World Hearing Week, noting that hearing loss is largely manageable with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. The statement was published on behalf of the Union by ENT specialist Ali Amca.
Ali Amca reminded that according to the World Health Organization, over 430 million people worldwide live with hearing impairments. He noted that cases of hearing loss are also recorded among Turkish Cypriots in Northern Cyprus across different age groups.
The ENT doctor listed the main causes of hearing loss: congenital and genetic factors, childhood infections, age-related changes, prolonged exposure to noise, side effects of certain medications, cranial injuries, and ear diseases. Treatment and rehabilitation methods include medication and surgical interventions, hearing aids, cochlear implants, and supportive communication strategies.
The Union called for regular screening examinations, especially for newborns and children, and for adults to seek timely medical attention if hearing deterioration is suspected. The statement emphasized that public support and awareness-raising are necessary to overcome barriers in education, employment, and social life for people with hearing impairments.
