TRNC Athlete Finishes 10th at the Paris Olympics
An athlete from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) competed in the women's high jump final at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Buse Savaşkan, representing the Turkish team, finished in 10th place, clearing a height of 1.86 meters.
The Olympic gold in Paris was won by Ukrainian athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh. The 22-year-old Ukrainian achieved a height of 2.00 meters on her first attempt. Silver went to Australia's Nicola Olyslagers, who also cleared 2.00 meters but only on her third attempt. The bronze medal was claimed by another Ukrainian athlete, Iryna Herashchenko, with a height of 1.95 meters.
Buse Savaşkan successfully cleared 1.86 meters on her second attempt but failed to clear 1.91 meters in three subsequent attempts. In the qualification round, the TRNC athlete set a personal record by clearing 1.92 meters, which placed her among the top 13 athletes in the tournament.
In the TRNC, Buse Savaşkan's performance at the Olympics has been hailed as a historic event. Officials and politicians at various levels have congratulated the athlete, who has made her mark in the sports history of Turkish Cypriots.
It is worth noting that a Russian athlete, competing at the Paris games for the Republic of Cyprus, finished 7th in the final with a height of 1.95 meters.
