Digital Labels and QR Code System to Launch in Northern Cyprus in Early May
Starting on May 2, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) will begin implementing the “digital label” and “digital QR code system” across its markets. The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the new regulation on the labeling of goods and services, tariffs, and price lists, which was published in the Official Gazette.
The regulation outlines the requirements for using digital labels and QR codes. Markets that maintain accounting records and employ at least five staff members will be required to obtain a list of their products from the digital system and publish it on the Ministry of Economy and Energy's website.
The product data will be transferred into the Digital QR Code System, which will generate the corresponding electronic labels. The Ministry will issue a circular outlining the technical specifications, format, and dimensions for the digital labels and QR codes.
The digital label must be prominently displayed on product packaging in a clear and legible format, providing essential information such as the price, the place of production, and product characteristics.
As part of an initiative to curb unjustified price hikes, 79 product categories will be subject to digital labeling. These include meat, chicken, fish, as well as fruits and vegetables.
