Turkey to Build New Road in Northern Cyprus
The Republic of Turkey is set to construct a new road from Güzelyalı to Sadrazamköy in Northern Cyprus. This announcement was made by Turkish Ambassador to Nicosia, Yasin Ekrem Serim, during his visit to Kayalar and a meeting with local residents.
Accompanying the ambassador was Erhan Arıklı, the Minister of Public Works and Transportation. According to the ambassador, the Güzelyalı-Sadrazamköy road will stretch for 16 kilometers. The road is expected to be upgraded and operational by September 2025.
The Turkish authorities have already approved the project. Construction will begin once the expropriation issues are resolved.
“Our precious time and financial resources have been wasted, particularly because road projects have remained incomplete due to expropriation problems and have been delayed for long periods. Therefore, work will not commence until the expropriation procedures are fully completed,” said Ekrem Serim.
The Minister of Public Works and Transportation added that 20 million Turkish lira has been allocated from the budget for the road’s maintenance and repair.
“The ambassador mentioned that it’s impossible to build an ideal road with the allocated resources and suggested that we cover the construction costs ourselves. We gladly accepted this offer.”
The Minister also noted that, under the protocol with Turkey, most highways in Northern Cyprus were built by Turkey, while some roads not included in the protocol were completed using local budget funds.
