The damage to the breakwater at Kyrenia’s Ancient Harbour has sparked public discussion and concern due to potential risks to the city’s historical monuments. Authorities stated that the situation requires immediate action rather than disputes over the division of responsibilities.

Clarifications were provided by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Serhan Aktunç, responding to statements by the Mayor of Kyrenia. According to him, further deterioration of the breakwater could put such iconic landmarks as the Chain Tower and the fortress at risk.

“Now is not the time to discuss bureaucracy and jurisdictions. If there is a danger, action must be taken. This is about protecting our historical heritage,” Aktunç emphasized.

The deputy minister reported that, within the framework of ongoing pier repair works, negotiations have been held with the contracting company. The damaged sections of the breakwater will be temporarily reinforced with concrete blocks, after which the structure will be strengthened with stone matching the historical appearance of the harbour.

The Ministry of Tourism noted that the works will be carried out in cooperation with all relevant bodies. The main goal is to prevent further destruction and ensure the preservation of Kyrenia’s historical monuments.

Authorities assured that the situation is under control and that restoration works will continue until the threat to the Ancient Harbour and the adjacent historical sites is fully eliminated.
