Arson Attacks Spark Fires in Cyprus Buffer Zone
Two fires broke out in the Cyprus buffer zone on the evening of Monday, April 21, and authorities believe they were the result of arson. According to emergency services, the incidents occurred back-to-back in the Derinya area of the buffer zone.
The first fire started at around 8:50 p.m., when one or more individuals reportedly entered the buffer zone from the Republic of Cyprus side in a vehicle and deliberately set bushes on fire. The flames quickly spread and crossed over into the territory of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
Fire crews from both communities responded swiftly and managed to bring the blaze under control.
Later that night, around 10:10 p.m., three more fires broke out in separate spots within the same area. These too were extinguished thanks to the coordinated efforts of firefighters from both sides of the divide.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incidents.
