In the buffer zone, there is unrest again
On Monday, the media reported that Cypriot-Turkish soldiers "around 4:00 PM on Monday installed a rotating camera and antenna on the roof of an empty building in the buffer zone of Ayios Dometios." It is also noted that shouts were heard in the area when "a large number of armed people, about 40 in total, appeared in the buffer zone."
A representative of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Alim Siddik, emphasized that "unauthorized work inside the buffer zone is strictly prohibited."
A representative of the government of the Republic of Cyprus, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, stated at the time that there was a "serious violation" of the buffer zone's operational regime.
However, the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) denied the accusations, stating that he is not aware of what happened, although he acknowledged that a project is currently being developed to increase the capacity of the Ayios Dometios crossing point so that "people can cross the border faster."
"This issue is being discussed in the bicommunal technical committee on crossing points, and no construction work is currently taking place," added the deputy minister.
A representative of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Alim Siddik, made a statement today, noting that "everything is calm" in the buffer zone at the moment.
