Restoration of Ancient Church Begins in Kyrenia's Old Harbor
Restoration work has begun on the historic Chrysopolitissa Church in Kyrenia's old harbor. After the restoration is complete, the building will be transferred to the municipality's ownership.
Kyrenia Mayor Murat Şenkul provided an update on the restoration's progress.
According to the mayor, city authorities have already prepared a project for the restoration of the historic Chrysopolitissa Church, located on a narrow street in the ancient port. The project was submitted to the Committee on Cultural Heritage and the European Union (UNDP) last year. Following the tender process, the winning company has commenced work on the site.
"We are committed to doing everything possible to protect and preserve our historical heritage and pass it on to future generations. In this regard, we have requested the Foundation to transfer ownership of the building to the municipality once the restoration work is completed," said Murat Şenkul.
It’s important to note that, according to the mayor, the Committee on Cultural Heritage and the UNDP have allocated approximately 20 million Turkish lira for the restoration work.
