In İskele, Northern Cyprus, a case opened for false extortion claim
In İskele, Northern Cyprus, a criminal case has been initiated against 53-year-old S.F. after he filed a false report to the police on September 15.
According to the Police Press Office (Polis Basın Subaylığı), S.F. contacted the İskele Police Department (İskele Polis Müdürlüğü) and claimed that while driving, an unknown person stopped him, introduced himself as a voluntary traffic control inspector, recorded a video allegedly for speeding, and demanded one thousand Turkish lira, promising not to submit the video to the police.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the described event did not occur. Police determined that S.F. intentionally gave knowingly false statements, thereby committing a crime classified as "amme fesatçılığı".
For residents of Northern Cyprus, this means that knowingly false reports to the police can lead to criminal liability. Information on the circumstances of the case has been published according to official authorities.
