In Nicosia, a hospital cashier was arrested in connection with the theft of 100,000 Turkish lira
Police brought to court in Nicosia, Northern Cyprus, a cashier of a private hospital, K.Ö., who was detained under the charge of "theft committed by an employee," according to the Criminal Division of the Nicosia Police.
Police officer Begum Semir presented the circumstances of the case in court. According to her, in September 2025, a patient paid 140,000 Turkish lira for treatment, after which the suspect, working as a cashier at the hospital, canceled a 100,000 Turkish lira charge made via bank card and appropriated the money.
The arrest took place on September 19. During the investigation, 142 cancellation transactions were identified, 129 of which were carried out using the suspect’s personal bank cards. The total amount of the cancellations is about 1,700,000 Turkish lira; the police intend to request information from the banks.
As a result of searches in the suspect’s office, home, and car, police seized two bank card readers, 16,500 Turkish lira, 220 pounds sterling, and 200 US dollars. Hospital cameras recorded video and audio that, according to the police, contain evidence of the crime.
Earlier, the police obtained a three-day extension of the detention period; later they petitioned for an 8-day custody. Judge Shevket Gazi granted the request, also ordering a medical examination of the detainee. After the hearing, the suspect suddenly felt unwell and was taken to Nicosia State Hospital in Northern Cyprus.
