City Walls Being Cleaned in Nicosia: Cultural Heritage Preservation Project Launched
Work has begun in Nicosia to clean and protect the historic city walls as part of the "Preservation and Care of Cultural Heritage – City Walls Reinforcement Project."
The project is being implemented in cooperation with:
- Lefkoşa Türk Belediyesi (LTB)
- Eski Eserler ve Müzeler Dairesi
- United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
The goal is to use scientific methods to remove wild vegetation that destroys historical masonry and threatens the structural integrity of the walls.
The work covers an area of 24,000 square meters and includes six bastions, including the area near the Kyrenia Gate.
Following preliminary surveys conducted in November 2025, a technical group was formed. The work is being carried out by four employees from the LTB Infrastructure and Cultural Heritage Protection Department who have undergone specialized training.
The project aims to strengthen the historical walls and protect them from environmental impact.
