Patient undergoes repeat heart transplant in Nicosia
In Nicosia, doctors performed a complex operation for a repeat heart transplant on a 55-year-old patient.
The operation took place at the Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital and lasted about 12 hours. According to the chief physician and cardiac surgeon Hasan Birtan, the patient's condition after the operation remains stable but critical, and he is in the intensive care unit.
It is reported that the donor was a 52-year-old individual pronounced brain dead, whose family gave consent for organ donation. Only the heart was found suitable for transplantation.
The patient had already undergone a heart transplant in 2019 — the first operation of its kind in Northern Cyprus. However, seven years after a heart attack, he again developed severe heart failure and was placed on the waiting list for a repeat transplant.
According to doctors, about 20 people are currently waiting for a heart transplant in the TRNC, but the real number of patients with severe heart failure is significantly higher. Medics also emphasized the importance of organ donation, which can save lives.
