57-year-old man detained in Lefkosa over sexual assault and harassment case
In Lefkosa, a 57-year-old man appeared in court after being arrested on charges of sexual assault and sexual harassment.
According to police officer Emre Özdiken, the incidents occurred on January 19, 2026.
Police reported that around 09:00 the suspect met a 46-year-old woman in the courtyard of a university in Lefkosa under the pretext of arranging a work permit. During the meeting, the man grabbed her hand without consent, pulled her toward him, hugged her, and engaged in sexual actions, including touching and sniffing her neck.
Later, around 10:00 the same day, near the parking area of the open education campus, the man met a 17-year-old girl allegedly to assist with course registration. Police state that he touched her without consent and engaged in sexual conversation, qualifying as sexual harassment.
Following complaints, the suspect was detained and a criminal investigation was initiated. Police stated that the case is at an early stage: witness statements are being collected and surveillance footage is under review.
After reviewing the submitted materials, Judge Şevket Gazi ordered the suspect to remain in custody for three days.
The investigation continues.
